No theological issues were truly at stake in the Copernican – more accurately Gallilean – debate. The only real issue was the discrediting of the Aristotelian/Ptolmaic model of the Cosmos: which model ought never to have been accepted lock-stock-and-barrel by the Scholastics. The Platonist Origen was quite right in saying that God condescends in revealing divine truth to humanity: and especially in the early days of that revelation!
