No threat of cyclone to Goa Posted by: Navhind Times in Goa News PANAJI: There is no threat to Goa from cyclonic depression prevailing in the northwest Arabian Sea for the last two days. A meteorological scientist of the IMD Goa has predicted that the prospective cyclone could deviate from its northwest track and head straight towards either Yemen or Oman. The well-marked low pressure over west central, south and east central Arabian Sea hovered for the last two days has brought no immediate threat of a cyclone to the West Coast of India especially Goa. Ruling out the possibility of cyclonic landfall in the state, the meteorological scientist said that if the western disturbances deviate from west to east over the northern latitudes en route to the Arabian Gulf then depression could take place in Pakistan and most likely area of landfall could be northwest Gujarat. However, the cyclone may not take the detour and instead head straight towards either Yemen or Oman, he opined. The meteorological scientist has indicated that the depression would move ‘initially’ to the northwest Arabian Sea and subsequently may intensify into a cyclonic storm mainly in the Gulf region and if it re-curves at all, which rarely happens, then it will hit first Pakistan and then coastlines of Gujarat and Goa. Referring to weather modules, he told The Navhind Times that there was no fear of cyclonic depression in the state since the upper air circulation in Arabian Sea was extending towards northwest direction in the Persian Gulf and the system would concentrate into a depression in the next 24 hours. However, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 48 hours. Considering the low pressure gaining momentum over the Arabian Sea since Thursday, the Indian meteorological department has already raised an alarm to fishermen not to venture into the sea. Meanwhile, many parts of the state received thundershowers due to the formation of convection
