Noah Pt2 **Spoiler Alert** One of the things that troubled many Christians about the movie “Noah” was that it seemed to portray God as a vengeful, angry, unforgiving Powerful being that just suddenly wrote humanity off. In His anger and displeasure He decides to destroy mankind, and purify the earth. The movie portray God as hateful…unloving…uncaring…distant, and unapproachable. “How could He just watch all those people drown? Unimaginable!!!! The real God would NEVER make such a judgment like that!!!” Well, that’s how many people viewed God before the cross…That’s how many people think God is like even today; Mean, hateful, and vengeful. “Oh but of course God is NOT like that!! He is a loving God! A caring God! A merciful and forgiving God! He absolutely LOVES His creation and only want the BEST for you!!!” (Imagine me doing my best Joel Osteen impersonation) So, that’s the God that we, the 21st century Christians believe in; and we present this loving, forgiving God to the masses!!! “And if you want to learn more about God make sure you read the Bible!” So imagine that someone who’ve never heard the “full gospel” takes the journey to read the Bible to find out about this loving forgiving God…They start from Genesis…gets to chapter 6 of Genesis and reads this; “So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” Genesis 6:7. Imagine reading that verse, and then somehow that person was no longer able to read anything else in the Bible. What conclusion would they come to about God? “I will DESTROY man…who “I” made!” How can God destroy mankind who He had been so intimate with when He created Him? I mean, man was created “In His image, after His likeness…” How can You destroy Your own creation? How can You destroy Your own CHILDREN, God????? And to add to it, we’re on a countdown for you to destroy the world AGAIN!!? By…FIRE?? Do you think I’m being irreverent? Do you think I’m misrepresenting The Bible, or even God? I am not. I am actually just reading the text exegetically. See, we should not avoid the tensions that are in our sacred text, the Bible. There are hard questions in the Bible!! There are some extremely difficult things that even the best of our Biblical scholars, theologians, and even your Pastor CANNOT explain!!!! So we shouldn’t get all worked up, and ready to annex ourselves from the earth because unbelievers, and atheists question God’s character, and intent toward His creation! At the movie we all held our breath when Noah was about to brutally, seemingly mercilessly kill his own grand daughters! (I did warn you of a spoiler alert) But isn’t that what God did with the flood? And Does He not have another “cleansing” scheduled?? We should not avoid or forbid these types of questions from ANYONE! We SHOULD, however, “always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15. See, I, and many of you know the rest of the story! But many others don’t know it…YET! So, let’s tell them the rest of the story!! I think the timing of this movie is perfect because we are moving toward the celebration of Passover, and the passion of Jesus Christ who is the conclusion and climax of the rest of the story! To Be Continued… Antonio Black, 2014
