Noah far exceeded my expectations. A stunning emotional and thought-proving visual masterpiece, Aronofsky’s artistic imagination successfully blends the multiple accounts of Noah that can be found in the Bible, the Book of Enoch, the Jubilee, as well as various Jewish midrash. By pulling from the various sources as well as flushing out details hinted at in the Biblical text, Aronofsky creates a world around this story that tells the emotional impact of the choices Noah made and explores the themes of mercy and justice. Naturally, he takes artistic liberties; this is a movie after all. But to me, they complimented the story and help to flush out the deeper lessons that are presented. For me, this film will join the ranks of the epic Biblical films like the Ten Commandments and the Passion of the Christ. If you would like a strict Biblical account, I would suggest reading Genesis. But if you want to witness an amazing story that will challenge you to hold a mirror to your own life and examine struggle of righteousness in all of us as we to try to balance justice and mercy in our lives, then this film is for you.
