Noam Chomsky, not surprisingly (though still kind of bizarrely), believes that Putin was within his right to annex Crimea, that Crimea historically belongs to Russia, and that Putin in essence is the good guy on the international stage, while the US is, well, the worlds primary Darth Vader. In a free society, someone has to play the part of a pesky contrarian, no matter what, and Chomskys life has been animated throughout by his fervent belief that the US is the main source of all evil in the world. There is no obnoxious, two-bit dictator he would not enthusiastically and all but automatically side with, so long as the US government condemns the latters dictatorial rule. While exercising to the hilt his constitutionally guaranteed freedom to be in staunch opposition to his countrys government under any and all circumstances, he has been nothing if not consistent in defending the sovereign right of sundry dictators throughout the world to deny the same freedoms to their own oppressed citizenry. A pretty rotten way, for an uncommonly smart and gifted man, to spend his life.
