Nobody (except probably members of this group) has heard of The Confusions of Young Törless but EVERYBODY has seen The Exorcist. Tubular Bells is not only iconic but its melodious sinisterness has become synonymous with fright. Even just hearing the first few bars of that synthesizer and I am transported to the darkened theater with those evil red letters over black background peering out at me. But equally as powerful to me is the other less famous theme from The Exorcist. Fantasia in Strings by Hans Werner Henze. It was a part of a larger suite created as a soundtrack for Young Törless in 1966. Friedkin didnt want anything to campy or reminiscent of other previous horror films because he viewed The Exorcist as more of a thriller. A psychology battle between two great forces. Conflict, shame and grief. But to me Fantasia gets more to heart of matter. You can feel the interplay of good and evil in its strings. The creeping fear that evil may outwit good. It gallops forward taking you to its breathless conclusion, you flailing along the way trying to make sense of the demonic possession of a little girl. Until that sad last melancholy note when you can sit back with a sigh of relief that you survived this event. Barely. https://youtube/watch?v=T4YCvwYz49o
