Noise seems to be one of the hot topics of discussion both online - TopicsExpress

Noise seems to be one of the hot topics of discussion both online and around town. And rightfully so, as City Council is being asked by some to review our current noise ordinance. Our current ordinance allows up to 85 decibels measured at the property line until 10 PM Sunday-Thursday, and 1AM Friday-Saturday. The ordinance is not triggered until someone makes a complaint, or an officer can initiate if he/she notices a violation. The ordinance requires the person(s) to be notified of the violation and given the opportunity to come into compliance. A ticket is then given if the noise continues. Until this past year we have had minimal complaints reported by either the public or police department regarding noise in the Nighttime Entertainment District. Some in the development community say the City has conflicting policy. On one hand we are encouraging residential development downtown, but on the other hand, our current noise ordinance allows an environment that is not conducive to residential living. What do you think? Is the current ordinance fair, and those who invest on the south side of Bay St. do so with the expectation of the current noise levels? Or should the current ordinance be modified to help lower the volume of downtown to encourage development? Beaufort City Council needs to hear from you. A public meeting is being held tomorrow, Tuesday (1/27) 5:00 PM at Beaufort City Hall.
