I was trucking out of Atlanta late one afternoon, I was driving a stretched out Peterbilt with a walk in sleeper, 13 speed, the thing would break 120 if you were crazy enough to run it, at that time I was crazy enough. at that time it was one of the longest and fastest trucks on the East Coast. I had just left a truck stop, headed for NC. I topped a hill and saw a Ga. State Trooper sitting in the middle, when I spotted him I had just hit 85 mph. and I was still in 11th gear. I got it slowed down and pulled off to the side of the interstate. I knew he had me, no use trying to make it to the SC line, which wasnt very far away. He came tearing out of the middle with those pretty blue lights flashing. Came up to the truck and I handed him all the paperwork he would need, I was always prepared for that. He looks at my license and says. Mr. Spence do you know how fast you were going.. Yes sir, I said, no use lying now, I had just tapped 85 when I saw you sitting there. Yes that is correct. And did you not know I was there. No Sir. Your buddies didnt warn you on the CB.. No sir I didnt have it on... Do you run a bird dog , didnt it go off.. No Sir, notice I am always polite. I dont have a bird dog.. Why not? Because Sir, you get to depending on them and they will let you down, so I just dont have one. Well Mr. Spence do you mind telling me exactly what you were doing going that fast. No Sir, not at all, I was listening to some good old Rock N Roll and trucknig to the music. He laughed and said when you came over that hill I was listening to Box Car Willey. I can understand what you mean.. Do you think you can slow down until you get to SC? Oh no doubt, I can run the speed limit for the next 20 miles at least.. He said well next time I see you ,you owe me a cup of coffee, I said no Sir, the next time I see you I owe you a steak dinner. We shook hands and both of us were smiling when I pulled out. onto the highway.. and yes I did go the speed limit until I hit SC.
