Nominate children for awards By Scunthorpe Telegraph | Posted: August 08, 2013 (2013 Awards but we need your nominations for 2014) This is Scunthorpe TIME is running out to nominate deserving youngsters for prizes at this years North Lincolnshire Child of the Year Awards. The awards have been set up to recognise and reward young people who go above and beyond what is expected of a child. The deadline for nominations has been extended to Friday, August 16 and a ceremony will be held to crown the winners on Sunday, September 15. The main Michael White Child of the Year award was won last year by Epworth youngster Alexander Strong, who lost his determined battle with cancer in January. Awards organiser Sue Maclean said: Alexander Strong won it last year because of his courage, his bravery and because he always wore a smile. Anyone can nominate a child for going above and beyond. It doesnt have to be a sick child, it can be someone who cares for relatives or has achieved and was not expected to achieve. We are looking for a child who has gone above and beyond what is expected of a child and it can be anyone from age zero to 18. The main award is named in memory of Michael White, 27, who fell to his death from a fourth-floor hotel room in Ibiza in September last year. Ms Maclean said: He was a young man who cared and helped a lot of people and didnt have to. He is an inspiration to lots of people. A variety of other awards will also be handed out on the night, including one named in honour of Alexander. Prizes for achievers, musicians and carers will also form part of the programme. Ms Maclean said: There is quite a selection of awards in honour and memory of certain people. What will happen is the family of the person who has got an award named in their memory will choose the winner. They will go through all of the nominations and choose. The awards will be presented at a star-studded ceremony at the Reeds Country Hotel in Barton-Upon-Humber. Celebrity guests on the night will include actor Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning in EastEnders, and also starred in The Bill. Footballers from Manchester City are also set to be at the event, along with Viking FM DJs Jim and Rosie and childrens favourites Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Ms Maclean said: It will be fab. There will be a red carpet, a film crew, a photographer and a wacky photo booth with different backdrops. To make a nomination, e-mail childoftheyear@ yahoo. co.uk or call 07517 892021.
