Nomophobia In May 2014, researchers at the University of Genoa in Italy proposed the term ‘nomophobia’ – a combination of “no mobile phone” and “phobia” – in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). “Nomophobia is considered a disorder of the contemporary digital and virtual society and refers to discomfort, anxiety, nervousness or anguish caused by being out of contact with a mobile phone or computer. Generally speaking, it is the pathological fear of remaining out of touch with technology”. Some characteristics of ‘nomophobia’: · using a mobile frequently and for long periods · owning one or more devices · always carrying a charger · feeling stressed with thoughts of; losing one’s phone, when phone isn’t close by, is lost or is unusable and/or inadequate credit · avoiding, where possible, situations that prohibit mobile phones (e.g. theatres) · sleeping with the phone in bed · preferring to interact via new technologies, rather than face-to-face · experiencing mobile-phone-related debts or considerable expenses.
