Non Natives have an image of our people. That our people are well off. We get everything for free. Were rich from casinos and own land and have free health care etc etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are many factors that have led to the poor way of life on the reservation. But in my opinion there are two that rise above the rest. When our ancestors were forced onto the concentration camps that you know as reservations, it was the beginning of the end of life as our people knew it. The land that was most barren, cold, infertile and distant from natural resources like water and animals for hunting. This placement of our ancestors was well thought out. Give them the worse land and eventually they will either completely assimilate or they will cease to exist Today, not a lot has changed. Many reservations are so deep in poverty that it surpasses the poverty level in 3rd world countries. There are some Nations that are better off than others. But the majority have been defined the most poverty stricken areas in the country. Although there are many reasons for this poor way of life, if you peel back the layers one by one, you come to the core of the problem. What began it all. That was the government. The government does not care about non Native citizens and even less about this countries first sons and daughters. I have personally called the relationship between Native Americans and the government as their dirty little secret.
