Non-Techy Tuesday: Password Management Okay… so first I have to confess: I reuse variations of the same password in most instances. And except for a few key accounts with a strong password (upper and lower case, special characters, and numbers), many of mine are rather simple. For example, I have an insane password my husband came up with for our banking accounts, but a very simple one for the online retailer where I order pet flea treatment. Dont judge. But even with my slacker tendencies, at last count we had 77 different online accounts with corresponding login names and passwords. Sure, I cheat and have a few tried and true variations, but that is still an insane number of passwords to remember. And Im not even talking about the accounts we access infrequently (say 401K management). Ugh I’ve come across a clever FREE tool: Last Pass to the rescue. lastpass As this application learns your browsing, it is a bit cumbersome to set up. But once you’ve taught Last Pass the logins to all your favorite online places, and shipping addresses, it will completely streamline your world wide web experience, auto filling a variety of forms beyond login name and password. Are you are like me, completely unimaginative on strong passwords? They have a tool which will create them for you. You can even save images of important documents, like social security cards and birth certificates. A security company, they reside on the cloud, making your plethora of passwords available not only on your computer, but also mobile devices. If you lack confidence in their encryption alone, there are options to get secondary authentication. There are other password vault options out there, like KeyPass, but most live on a single computer’s hard drive. I know we’ve a few techy types lurking who occasionally chime in on Tuesday.
