None of my regular shows were on tonight, which meant I should have tried to write but instead I watched a couple of cheap horror movies. First up was the 2012 British film Gangsters, Guns, and Zombies. I saw the trailer on another cheap British movie I bought recently and thought it looked fun and a bit like Cockneys Vs. Zombies with more of a slant towards Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels or Reservoir Dogs. The beginning is decent. 5 gangsters have just robbed a bank and are making their way to a safe house, all amidst a zombie outbreak. It starts decent enough, pretty tough, funny but with a few too many non sequitur zombie bits on the side. However, about 1/2 way through the film, the originality peters out and it becomes just another run of the mill zombie movie. It also appears to get cheaper, if thats possible. Id give it a C- but its probably a straight D. The other cheap horror movie I watched was the 2008 American film Midnight Movie. MM was a bit more professional and had some production value for its buck. Its the story of a crazed 1960s horror movie director who uses his movie to bring its killer to life, stalking and killing the patrons of a modern day movie house running it as a midnight feature. Its a pretty typical by the books supernatural slasher movie with the killer dispatching his victims, without any surprise to the audience, who could probably guess the order the victims will be dealt with. What makes it interesting is the whole movie aspect, the fact that the killer comes from the film and drags his victims back inside with him, which makes for an interesting ending, although I found it a little too succinct and suddenly, they were all hit by a bus. Still, if you run across it on cable and have nothing better to do, you might find it a lark. The copy I have came as part of a four movie set, which I purchased for the whopping price of $1.95. For a movie I only paid 48 cents for, it wasnt all that bad. Id rate it a high C+.
