Nonverbal communication, often referred to as nonverbal behavior - TopicsExpress

Nonverbal communication, often referred to as nonverbal behavior or body language, is a means of transmitting information—just like the spoken word—except it is achieved through facial expressions, gestures, touching (haptics), physical movements (kinesics), posture, body adornment (clothes, jewelry, hairstyle, tattoos, etc.), and even the tone, timbre, and volume of an individual’s voice (rather than spoken content). Nonverbal behaviors comprise approximately 60 to 65 percent of all interpersonal communication (…) (Burgoon, 1994) It has been well established by researchers that those who can effectively read and interpret nonverbal communication, and manage how others perceive them, will enjoy greater success in life than individuals who lack this skill. (Goleman, 1995) Here is a great read to get you started in developing your knowledge on the subject. For a Hot Yoga teacher, this has to be ‘translated’ into being aware of, and tuning up, your non-verbal communication skills for teaching a Yoga class (we do this as a part of the Game Changers training). That may be a very important idea, unless you are naturally a very good communicator. Also, a great lesson for me was to watch episodes of the sitcom ‘Seinfeld’ with the sound on, and then sound-off. I just LOVE how the main characters use body language to underline the dialogues. Just a few great body-language communicators you can watch on YouTube and learn from: Charlie Chaplin, James Dean, Bill Clinton, Cesar Millan… So much fun! Watch below, turn off the sound :) https://youtube/watch?v=PaPxSsK6ZQA
