Nordhoff High and its football team celebrated homecoming in a big way Friday at Ojai Valley Community Stadium, defeating previously undefeated San Marcos 48-7. The Rangers made quick work of the Royals, jumping out to a 41-0 halftime lead, taking advantage of great field position to score touchdowns on all six possessions while outgaining the visitors 249-48 in the first half. “I don’t know if I’m as surprised as I am pleased,” said Nordhoff head coach Tony Henney, whose Rangers improved to 5-0. “I’m glad we put them away early because, as I told the team, San Marcos came in here accustomed to winning football games. And if we were to let them hang around, you open Pandora’s box.” Nordhoff’s defense was particularly impressive in shutting that “box.” San Marcos senior quarterback Wesley Ghan-Gibson came into the game having completed more than two-thirds of his passes, but Nordhoff held him to 15 of 36 and 114 yards. Emmett Johnsen recorded a pair of sacks. Linebackers Shane Hersh and Koby Welch combined for 20 tackles, and the secondary made two interceptions. “Our defense works hard every day in practice and has really good leadership,” said Nordhoff defensive coordinator Cliff Farrar, who recorded his 200th win on the Nordhoff sideline as a head or assistant coach alongside Henney. “I can make checks, and the kids will respond. “We don’t get a lot of sacks, but we get a lot of hurries. Gibson is a good quarterback and has great feet and throws a nice ball, but our guys in the secondary hit people, and as a result, receivers won’t catch passes because they just don’t want to get hit.” Nordhoff quarterback Tanner Workman threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Austin Wolcott, Brandon Wadsworth and Jake Boyd for scores in the first half. Matt Woodcock ran for a pair of touchdowns from inside the red zone for the other first-half scores, and Tayler Livingston — who finished with a game-high 85 yards rushing on 16 carries — recorded the Rangers’ final score on a 5-yard carry on the home team’s first possession of the third quarter. San Marcos’ Garret Paulson returned the ensuing kick off to midfield, and Gibson completed 5 of 8 passes after that, connecting with fellow senior Cameron Whitney from 14 yards out for the Royals’ only score of the game. This year’s homecoming game’s theme was “Superheroes,” and before the game Nordhoff recognized some real superheroes: Ojai’s veterans. Those on hand to be recognized included Arlyn Olson, Bruce Vail, Doojie Seliger, Harry Hunt, Jack Schulz, Dave Pressey and Roland Yanez, Nordhoff hosts Sierra Canyon next Friday at 7 p.m. Read more: vcstar/news/2013/oct/04/nordhoff-stays-unbeaten-by-suffocating-san/?vcspreps=1#ixzz2gpVAjEek - vcstar
