Nordschleife...... Cycling ........legendary Nordschleife and on bicycles !!!!! This time, however, at the c. For two-time DTM Champion Scheider (Audi) and former Formula 1 ace Timo Glock (BMW), contesting the 24-hour race ‘Rad am Ring’ (Bicycle at the Ring) represents a debut: for the first time, the two enthusiastic bicyclists are going to contest a race on two wheels. Somewhat amazing, as cycling is an integral part of the two DTM drivers’ fitness programme. “Since I got to know my current coach, the former cycling professional Martin Kiechle, some years ago, we are cycling virtually every day,” says Scheider who wants to cover a total of 10,000 kilometres this year, on his bicycle. While Scheider lives not far from Lindau, Glock resides some 80 kilometres further away, near Konstanz, on the other side of Lake Constance. And both places are good starting points for demanding cycling tours. Glock even occasionally is accompanied by former cycling greats such as Andreas Klöden or Jan Ullrich. “I definitely prefer cycling to running”, admits Glock. “That’s my main fitness workout.” None of the two ever explored the Nürburgring Nordschleife on a bicycle, to date. “My dad contested the race at the ring several years ago and therefore, I roughly know what kind of lap times you have to achieve,” says Scheider – while Glock prefers to be surprised. “I’m aware that you have to cope with changes in altitude of about 500 metres per lap,” he says, “And that there will be several long uphill sections. This certainly can be tough, particularly in the night.” Timo Scheider knows the Nordschleife at night – but only from a motor racer’s point of view. “This arguably won’t prove to be a major advantage when it comes to strategy and tactics for a bicycle trace,” thinks Scheider. “But I’m curious to find out how it feels to cycle at the Nordschleife at night.” Timo Glock agrees. “Cycling on the Nordschleife definitely will be something completely different. I know that Timo also is rather fir when it comes to cycling. Let’s see what happens. It could be funny to meet every now and then out there on the track, during the course of the race.” Altogether, the race will be contested by some 5,000 cyclists. nuerburgring.de/en/ueberuns/the-legend-nuerburgring/nordschleife.html
