Norm Butler Finds His Calling by Volunteering at CSC After 30 years in the construction business Norm Butler was looking for a change. He is following his heart and helping the less fortunate by serving brunch two days a week at the Clackamas Service Center. He is taking his new career one step further by pursuing a two-year degree in Social Services at Clackamas Community College. In June, Norm began working 15-17 hours a week as an intern at CSC and is learning about the effective policies and procedures of a successful non-profit. He is currently creating a community survey and organizing a Community Advisory Board. “I picked this field because I want to make a difference,” said Norm. “I want our friends here at CSC to have the same opportunities that I had. It is then up to them to do what they want with those opportunities.” Norm works 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays preparing and serving meals to the homeless. He and Trena Sutton prepare on average 80 to 100 meals a day and a week ago they served 175 meals. Norm does more than just serve meals. He carries on conversations with the homeless and checks in to see how they are doing. He and the rest of the staff at CSC truly care about these people and want to help in any way they can. “I believe if we all work together and investing our unique gifts and talents we will see a significant improvement in the lives of our friends at the Center,” said Norm. The Clackamas Service Center provides a warm place for the homeless to escape the elements and be with friends. Volunteers at the Center offer a caring smile, a warm heart, and a comfortable and stable environment.
