Norm Chow: should he stay or should he go? His hiring didnt thrill me. I wanted a hungry-as-hell assistant coach who saw that raising UH football to excellence as his ticket to a big time job. A carpetbagger was okay with me as long as he was an alpha dog who could lay the foundation for a culture of energy, eagerness and an expectation of winning. Instead we got a 65-y-o on his last job before retirement. I wasnt thrilled but I understood why UH hired him: successful local boy comes home is a powerful story in Hawaii. Its been two years and a 3-20 record since. To most folks that says -- hell, yells in your ear -- fire the coach, doesnt it? And yet these kids havent quit. They play hard despite it all. Chow and his staff are developing the players and they are getting better. UH needs continuity and a long range plan to develop a solid program and build a winning culture. Chow is the best bet to provide continuity. I say he stays.
