Normally, I dont address current #events, but I believe this has to be said. Regarding the Mike Brown case, Ive seen people on social media blame the #government, the church, Greek organizations, and #celebrities because the public believes the above mentioned groups havent done enough. My question is where is our level of responsibility and personal accountability? As a #parent: I taught my children to watch their surroundings, the people who they associate with, how they speak, and how they present themselves because those factors are how we are judged, treated and perceived. Is it right? No, but it is #reality in most arenas. I also taught them how to handle themselves in difficult situations. Does this mean that they wont ever be a victim of a random shooting? No, but it does reduce the chances. As a citizen: When laws were written no they werent designed with Blacks in mind, but they werent written for any other protected class either, i.e. elderly, women, or the GLBT community. However, laws have been rewritten because people invested their time, #money and other resources to drive change. I served on the Human Relations Commission before moving to Texas and people of color was not showing up at City Council Meetings, public meetings, forums or any other arena where issues, #laws, and policies were being discussed and decided. I personally witnessed how bullying, gay rights and legalizing marijuana gained momentum and became laws because the people that thought those things mattered, got those things on the ballots then they showed up and voted. Is there a single right answer to end racial inequality? No, but rioting is not the answer, neither is shopping boycotts. The things that will make a difference are? 1. Educate and equip our children. 2. Attend public meetings in our communities. 3. Volunteer and/or serve on a Board. 4. Mentor our children and #youth. 5. Support what we believe in, including financially 6. Educate ourselves on the structure of local and state #government. My answers arent the only answers, but its a start!
