Normally, the art world likes nothing better than record-breaking sales. But the recent sale of three images by landscape photographer Peter Lik for $10 million—including one that went for a record $6.5 million—has caused a different reaction. As we noted last week, a number of experts have questioned whether the sales, to an anonymous collector, were merely a marketing stunt. Doubts about Lik have arisen is the photographers native Australia, notes Art Market Monitor. Meanwhile, the Guardian’s Jonathan Jones says that getting $10 million for your work doesn’t make you an artist, in any case. In a business where money is often the ultimate validation of an artwork’s quality, that’s a bold statement.
