Norsled was well represented at Vickies celebration of life today, including Sophia Wills malberian. flowers were beautiful. I did make comments, below I would likely never have met Vickie but for our shared love of the dogs. Not only did she become a great and inspiring friend but during the last year or so, I counted on her nearly every day. She called one day a number of years ago saying she knew we needed a transport and could she help. Sure. Great and she did. After a few more transports, she told me she was coming to meet me in person since she had been working behind the scenes. That was several years ago. Will never forget that. From then, she became more and more helpful and I came to rely more and more on her. She was always there to assist with all the transport in the northern extended Bay Area. Im sure she would have gone further if we would have let her! No matter when I called, she would always make herself available. I could count on her without a worry – which is so important when lives are at stake. Despite limited income, she would always make sure there was gas in that mustang to save a husky! She never complained, she was always happy and upbeat. With her ubiquitous She was the epitome of a true warrior… with a heart of gold. And a really tough cookie! Rarely a weekend went by when she was not there, driving all the way from Vacaville to Concord, to help transport dogs to each fair. Despite what we could tell was failing health and frailness. She became our regular “fair monitor” and could also be counted on to keep a watchful eye on activities and make sure things went without a hitch – no dogs escaped, no people had run ins, and it was organized and efficient. I knew she was ill but it was only very recently, I found that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer 10 years ago and given 6 months to live. She sure made liars out of her medical team. Like I said, she was one tough cookie – sometimes a little too tough for her own good. She would willingly take on big strong dogs who would sometimes pull her over or get off leash (I can remember a few incidents like that where we went all over Concord looking for a pair of escaped malamutes!) I located them visiting at a condo a few miles away! Staying active, passionate about what she cared about, uncomplaining despite what I’m sure was enormous pain. Vickie was amazing, and a role model for how to deal with what life throws at you. We shared a passion for saving canine lives and that transcended any other differences political or philosophical we may have had. None of those things mattered when we worked together. There is a BIG HOLE in norsled now, where Vickie was – she can never be replaced but we will remember her forever and I will always be inspired to continue what she loved so much – saving husky lives. Love you Vickie and I know you can hear me!
