North American Premiere this weekend! Travelling for the first time outside of Singapore, “The Lost Dhow: A Discovery from the Maritime Silk Route” opens this Saturday at Aga Khan Museum. The exhibition brings to life the cargo of a 9th century shipwreck that was lost for more than 1,200 years! Discovered in 1998 and is considered to be the earliest and most important marine archaeological discovery of the 20th century. The Belitung Shipwreck is provides the earliest evidence of a maritime silk route — and to the vibrant exchange of ideas, and technologies between peoples that occurred centuries before the Portuguese entered the region in the late 15th century. Through the display of more than 300 objects from its cargo, this exhibition tells compelling stories about the ship, its crew, and the treacherous movement by sea of domestic and luxury wares between continents 1,200 years ago.
