North East has biggest share of care home residents The North East was the area of England and Wales with the highest proportion of its elderly people in care, Office of National Statistics figures have shown. Figures from the 2011 Census showed 3.5 per cent of the North East population aged 65 or more lived in a care home while the same was true of 15.2 per cent of the population aged 85 or more. However, the four local authorities with the highest proportion of residents aged 65 and over living in care homes in 2011 were all in the South East, with Hastings - 6.1 per cent - the highest. The ONS paper, How do Changes in the Older Resident Care Home Population Between 2001 and 2011 Vary Across England and Wales? said: “The high proportion in the South East and North East might be partially explained by higher demand through increased migration of the 65 and over population to the South East and poorer health in the North East.” In some local authority areas, such as Rossendale in Lancashire, more than a fifth of the population aged 85 or more lives in a care home. ftadviser/2014/12/10/ifa-industry/north-east-has-biggest-share-of-care-home-residents-MGyrlQCWGj2Xiv5fSOto8L/article.html
