North End mid 1960s Parking meters were introduced in Croydon on 2 Oct 1961. Traffic congestion had increased as car ownership and use went up. The bad conditions in North End, especially on a Saturday afternoon are well-illustrated here. A general desire to reduce congestion, pollution and fumes led Croydon Council to first introduce a partial pedestrianisation scheme, then a complete ban on traffic in North end. CNHSS
