North Wellington vs. BNU, Saturday 30th August 2014 3pm, Alex Moore Turf We travelled to Alex Moore Park for the final game of the season, having already secured promotion and still with a chance to win the league if KCU slip up and we win. We again started the game with quick passing and sharp movement. We were immediately creating chances and had North Wellington on the back foot for the opening 15 minutes. We had one opportunity cleared off the line and Paul Clune fashioned a wonderful opportunity for himself, only to be denied by the post. After such a promising start, we took our foot off the gas and allowed North Wellington back into the game. They were creating opportunities of their own, only to be thwarted by the impressive Adam Glover who pulled off several smart saves. North Wellington took the lead in the 27th minute as we gifted possession deep in our own half and were made to pay the price. Not even Glover could keep this one out. North Wellington were at it again 5 minutes later as they doubled their lead. Playing three up front was causing our back four problems, as the unmarked striker had time to pick his spot with a well taken finish. 2-nil North Wellington. Things were not going to plan. As the half time whistle blew, we needed to rediscover our spark if we would have any hope of finding our way back into this game. The message was to keep our shape, shorten up our passing game and increase the tempo. Ben Keat, who was injured in the 1st half, made way for Joe Cruden after 50 minutes. We also introduced ball-winning midfielder Simon Barker and centre forward Aaron Langlands. We halved North Wellingtons lead in the 63rd minute after Elliot Riley was fouled in the box and a penalty was awarded. Ben Purser took a confident penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. 2-1. Game on. However, that joy was short lived as North Wellington scored again, via a quality curled strike that left Glover no chance. We threw numbers forward and changed our shape as we searched for another goal. We were still creating plenty of opportunities but couldnt put the ball in the back of the net. Langlands and Blake Weston both hitting the crossbar and George Frost blazing just over the bar. On another day we wouldve scored 5 or 6. The full time whistle sounded the end of the season, handing North Wellington a deserving victory. They were well up for it and we couldnt quite execute to the standards we had set. Strong performances by the hard working Elliot Riley, the dangerous George Frost and Man of the Match Adam Glover. While we were disappointed with the result, it shouldnt detract from what has been a most excellent season. We won the Presidents Cup from Island Bay for the 1st time, recorded the most wins and most points in BNU Mens 1st Team history and most importantly earned promotion to Capital Premier for the 2015 season. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Kapiti Coast United on their league victory. We look forward to continuing our rivalry next season. Congratulations to our Mens Reserves who won the Capital 5 league with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Petone. Well done lads. Finally I would like to say thank you to our players who have been brilliant all year, playing some quality football and earning results that have seen us become a benchmark team in Capital 1. It has been a pleasure for Annie and I to work alongside you, your commitment and willingness to learn has made our jobs so much easier. Thank you all for your huge part in this successful campaign. I look forward to seeing you all at Prizegiving next weekend in what is always a special occasion. Cheers Dene
