Lafia – The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) on Thursday donated N100 million to widows of police/security officers killed recently at Alakio in Nasarawa State by suspected cultists. Chairman of the forum, Dr Babangida Aliyu of Niger, announced the donation at the Government House, Lafia The Niger governor led his counterparts from Jigawa, Kaduna and Katsina states to commiserate with the families of the slain officers, government and people of Nasarawa state over the incident. “We are in the state to condole with and express our support to our counterpart in the quest to find the killers of the security operatives who died on active service. “There is no state in the country that is not presently experiencing one form of security challenge or the other. “What happened in Nasarawa is pathetic because those that were chosen to protect the citizens were the ones attacked. “In other countries, no one dare kill anyone with authority and go scot free. When nations allow that to happen, then, they are questioning the foundation of governance”, he said. He commended the governor for setting up a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the killings. He urged Gov. Umaru Al-Makura to do whatever was necessary to ensure that the culprits were brought to book. He said that was the only way to ensure that the soul of the departed did not die in vain. “The NGF delegated us to condole with the families of the slain officers, the government and people of the state over the unfortunate incident. “We are also asked to talk to you and also encourage you to continue with the good work you are doing for your people. “So, we implore you not to do anything because of the next election, but for the good of the people of the state”, Aliyu said. He said the governor should exercise the powers vested on him by the Constitution to ban any organisation that undermines the security of the state. The Niger state governor urged the people to join hands with the government to confront the menace, saying, “evil only triumphs when good people keep quite.” Aliyu said the country must encourage the younger generation to join any of the security services of their choice. “When I heard what was done for the SSS and policemen who died in Alakio, I was not happy because of the disparity. “The reward system must be standardised, such that anyone who died in active service will be happy to have died for his fatherland. “Any security operative, whether a senior or junior officer, who died in active must be happy to say, I know Nigeria will take care of those that I left behind”, he said. Responding, Al-makura thanked the NGF delegation for their solidarity and support. He said that his administration would do everything possible to unravel the Alakio killers and urged the security agencies to carry out their own part diligently. “The gesture is an indication that governors are their brother’s keepers, no matter the disagreement and differences in political parties, we remain one family”, Al-makura said.
