Northern Lights Time Lapse photography illustrating movement of Northern Lights some 50 to 100 miles high in the sky. Northern Lights are caused by charged particles (usually electrons) emanating from sunspots. Most of these charged particles are bounced off earths magnetic field. However, a few are channeled by earths magnetic field into curtain like structures. Northern Lights are usually green, but at higher latitudes, red and purple can be seen dancing in the sky.
