Northern Territory Emergency Services were called upon to use - TopicsExpress

Northern Territory Emergency Services were called upon to use their brand new flood rescue boats sooner than expected this evening. Reports were received that a vehicle had been swept off a crossing on the Marrakai track southeast of Darwin and washed about 100 meters down river before lodging against a tree. The 20 year old woman and her two year daughter managed to climb into the tree with the assistance of a 25 year old male. Community members in the area raised the alarm, but were unable to reach the trio due to the strength of the water and distance from the bank. Upon arrival of emergency services personnel, the water was lapping approximately 1 metre below the trio. NTES voluteers were able to launch the boat and retrieve all three persons quickly and safely before reuniting them with friends on the bank. Territory Duty Superintendent Helen Braam said, Once again Id like to thank the dedicated team of NTES volunteers, who willingly give up their time to selflessly serve their community. and Despite our warnings, people continue to endanger themselves by driving into water, which is fast flowing or which they are unable to see the bottom of. If you have no interest in your own welfare, please at least consider the Emergency Services personnel who risk their lives to rescue you, or your family who has to stand by and watch helplessly. Driving into a flooded waterway is not only irresponsible, but selfish behaviour.
