Norton Sound CDQ red king crabbers earn $1.84 million on summer deliveries, third highest on record SEAFOOD.COM NEWS [The Cordova Times] October 14, 2013 Thirty-two resident fishermen who delivered 337,393 pounds of red king crab to Norton Sound Economic Development Corp.s subsidiary Norton Sound Seafoods Products in Nome earned in excess of $1.84 million for this years harvest. That was an average of nearly $57,400 per permit holder, said Tyler Rhodes, communications director for the community development quota group. The payout was NSEDCs third highest on record for summer deliveries of red king crab to Nome. The season was a challenging one, for despite having the largest quota in recent years, the harvesters had difficulty locating productive fishing areas. After much time and fuel expended with mixed results, fishermen achieve consistent harvests at the very end of the season, Rhodes said. NSSP was again able to offer fishermen $5.50 a pound for crab delivered to the seafood plant in Nome and $5.25 a pound for crab delivered to tender vessels. Those prices applied to crab purchased through both the open-access and CDQ fisheries, and mirrored the dock price for the Nome CDQs record year in 2012. NSSP is continuing to diversify its markets, placing more emphasis this past summer in live markets in the United States and Asia, but the majority of the CDQs production is in the form of frozen sections processed in Nome. NSSP is also now marketing direct to consumers through its website, NortonSoundSeafood -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Ramsingh Seafood News 1-732-240-5330 Email comments to michaelramsingh@seafood
