This refers to your editorial ‘Control pollution in cities’ (NIE, June 5). This write up is thought provoking and is the embodiment of reality. Undoubtedly your suggestion that if the civil society, industry and trade join hands with the government, the presence of breathable air and drinkable water will be materialised. At present the road infrastructure is not competent to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles and the congestion of traffic is polluting the atmosphere with carbon gases which is not conducive to human health. Banks should be instructed not to make available further loans to purchase private vehicles, instead the Government should direct them to issue loans for agricultural purposes on liberal terms. Undoubtedly , the public transport system should be developed with state – of – the – art technology applying to both the vehicles and management skill. The buses and trains should be stylish, comfortable and hygienic and the crew should be synonymous of hospitality and emotional quotient. If the public transport system comply with this, the rich are sure to abandon their vehicles in their homes and travel by public transport. Reasonable space for roads can be achieved if it is made mandatory to build houses in a vertical manner in corporations and municipalities, thereby, ensuring the reduction of the plinth area at the basic level. The Japanese are a fine example in this regard, as most of them travel by train and by other modes of public transport. Name : Sabu Kelachandra Place : Chingavanam
