Not an abandoned railroad tunnel, but an abandoned *cable* road - TopicsExpress

Not an abandoned railroad tunnel, but an abandoned *cable* road tunnel. As far as I have been able to determine, this is the only thing that remains of the Solvay Process Companys cable road. They had to bring ore from their mine high up on the hillside down to their plant by the side of Onondaga Lake, NY. You can see the cable support brackets on the roof. I visited it in February of 2008, hence the ice stalagmites on the floor of the tunnel. It ran at a 2.2% grade, end to end, but it would have been extremely difficult to get a railroad up there because of the steepness of the hill at the far end, and the hills in-between. They had to build a tunnel here because the hill was directly in-line between the quarry at Split Rock and the Solvay plant on the lake. Most of the land between the two endpoints has been developed, but there are a few areas in-between that might have some tower foundations. I dont see anything on the aerial photographs, nor have I done extensive field work. Youd think that somebody somewhere has, but if they havent, they didnt publish it on the Internet. Yet.
