Carry a spare flashlight on your person. A trauma/wound kit is a must in your car, and better if you can wear it on your person. Carry a shotgun or rifle (Or both) in your car. Look before you get out for that cup of coffee. Keep your gun hand free at all times. LET DISPATCH KNOW where you are at. Ignore the car radio playing that rock music, listen with your window down at least a little so you can hear things. USE your spotlight! Never assume or think a person is being cooperative, EXPECT them to get violent any moment. Go home at the end of your shift folks.... Happy New Year.
