Not everyone realized the significance of seeing Lena being so funny and friendly yesterday - but if you read below youll see what a treat it was and why it made my heart smile.... :) VOTK took part in a governmental seizure of ten lions and tigers on February 9th 2010, near Peru, Indiana. They were able to take two of the cats and the other eight went to another sanctuary in southern Indiana. The living conditions were the worst they had seen in their 36 years of rescue and it was extremely difficult to be within 3 feet of the “human” who put these animals in this situation for many, many YEARS. Tiny roll crates stored in a dark, dreary shed, covered with dust and slime from a leaky roof – filled with lions and tigers! No place to exercise, no toys, no bedding – just a plywood floored 4x5 foot crate – some for as long as 16 YEARS! LENA, a tiny Siberian tiger, is a special needs individual. Her growth was stunted by the conditions and her hind quarters are severely atrophied from the lack of movement. Since her arrival, we have discovered that she has difficulty with vision disturbances and cannot judge distances. She loves to have volunteers sit and talk to her, but when they leave she jumps up on the fence confused by the movement. She is on medication, but will always be crippled in the hind quarters. Confidence is not her strong point and she is very slow to pick up on things.
