Not exactly religion-related, but this pending disaster could be horrendous - and just the start of troubles for many other major cities worldwide. One could tie the destruction of nature that often leads to environmental and civil collapse to a lack of respect for the natural world, which many religions HAVE fostered in the past. Hence, nature worship prevented people in some eras and areas from destroying forests and fouling water and air. Others, however, in trying to appease gods have destroyed their environment, so no one is calling for a return to that type of respect.
