Not going to lie: I was never a fan of Robin Williams. But his death compels me to climb upon my soapbox and speak about depression and other mental illnesses. I can only imagine the number of people who cant believe why hed take his own life. (I can hear it now He was famous, rich and had so much to live for!). But, you see, it wasnt a choice. While Williams may have carried out the actions that led to his death, he no more chose to end his life than someone chooses to die of cancer. Im sure Ill probably get some flack for this comparison, but its OK. I dont expect people who have never personally dealt with mental illness to understand. Mental illness is just that, an ILLNESS. I am SO happy JCCI - Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. is doing a study on mental health and only hope it will shed some light on these issues—and more important, keep people alive.
