(Happiness), excerpts Not In Another Place, But This Place… (Happiness) 3 channel video, 16.33 min 2014 Description: Not In Another Place, But This Place… (Happiness) is the culmination of a two-year work/research period that was initiated by curator Tricia Van Eck. For this piece Leenaars explored the political and social nature of happiness, guided by questions such as “ Who is responsible for happiness?” and “How can individual perceptions about happiness be translated into a collective story?” As a neighborhood artist-in residence Leenaars immersed herself in the Edgewater community, establishing the “Bureau for Investigations of Strategies for Happiness, Community, and Policy Development,” a pop-up space used to conduct interviews. Neighbors, city workers, the Alderman, the district police commander, high school students were welcomed to talk about what happiness meant to them. Leenaars became the visiting artist at Senn high school in Edgewater and worked over a 4-month period with students on their own videos on ‘happiness’. She invited all participants to join the cast, using the months of interviews to generate a loose script for Happiness. Interview answers led to drawings that became the inspiration for the set and the actions performed on the set. Some of these acts are literal, others symbolic. But mostly they are something in between relating to the subjective nature of happiness. The Senn high school auditorium became the set for production of this immersive 3 channel video installation, presented for the first time at the Glass Curtain Gallery (Chicago) part of the show: RISK: Empathy, Art and Social Practice.
