Not long back from Weisdale Voe where we felt helpless watching a very big pilot whale in deep distress. We could see a huge graze on its forehead, gashes on its dorsal fin and what looked like a gash on its underbelly. It was obviously very disoriented as it rolled over several times and swam in circles and figures of eight. Some folk were there several hours before us and saw the whale thrashing in the shallows two or three times. We witnessed the last time it did it during daylight (some of you may find the video upsetting). Fortunately when we left, it was swimming in deeper water in the centre of the voe with the tide coming in. We can only hope the turn of the tide will help it swim back out to sea, but we are very concerned about its injuries and disoriented state. Well see what the dawn brings tomorrow.
