Not many elected officials in Greece are seen as good administrators. But as the Guardian says the Mayor of Thessaloniki is different. I have been involved with a number of visits to Melbourne by Greek politicians and I must say the Mayors recent visit was the most impressive because he didnt just spend his time with the Greek community, he was approachable and made himself available as did his delegation. Hes turned the cities finances around, cleaned the streets, brought a record number of tourists to the city, expanded the cosmopolitan feel of the city by reopening lane ways and pedestrianising narrow streets, the city has now become the Balkans shopping destination and there is a new vibe whilst the rest of Greece is suffering. Hes shown that left of centre politicians can be both good administrators and reformers. These are the things that Mayors should be judged on
