Not many people know that Shah Waliullah, Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab and Uthman Dan Fodio r.a.h. have something in common beside their reformist zeal. They all were connected to Shaykh al- Hindi the great scholar and ideological reformer of ahadith and fiqh who taught in Mecca. Uthman Dan Fodio r.a. never made Hajj and therefore never met him but his teacher Shaykh Jibril was a student of al-Hindi and took to heart his reformist zeal and attempted to implement them in the Sokoto area with no success. My point is this; while all of these men went on to change the way Muslims thought in their societies they were different yet similar. This is an indication that reformation is an antidote that must be applied according to the situation on the ground and it must be able to absorb portions of the peoples cultural processes which are not in conflict with Islam.
