Not marine mammal related, but definitely relevant to some of the issues and concerns weve been facing this past year as the use of drones has increased. The reaction of this Mother Kangaroo is further proof that drones should only be used in close proximity to wildlife by trained professionals who are conducting bona fide scientific research, emergency response or law enforcement work. Weve received several reports of cetaceans and pinnipeds being startled/disturbed/harassed by drones when not used appropriately, and were working with colleagues to develop guidelines for using drones near marine mammals for legitimate work. Thrill seekers (i.e., members of the public) really just need to keep a safe distance from wildlife, period -- either by land, sea or air... iflscience/plants-and-animals/kangaroo-punches-drone-out-air
