Not only in Australia ... bats are misunderstood world-wide. They are harmless, great mosquito eaters ... I love to see them in the skies at dusk, out for dinner and to eat a lot of the bugs that love to eat on ME!! They are small and have predators, most of them human, who think bat and vampire bats when there are a LOT of varieties of them ... I rescued on last summer ... it was a small, adorable thing. It didnt make it (I think it fell from its roost as they were working on the roof where I found it). Yes, some can carry rabies but it doesnt take much to put on a pair of gloves if an injured bat is found and to call a rehabber!!
