“Not so Boaring!” In the near darkness of a dusky spring - TopicsExpress

“Not so Boaring!” In the near darkness of a dusky spring evening I had already shot a large sow and was now manoeuvring myself to approach a field from the bush side to hopefully encounter some of this fallen sow’s mates. The angry squeal of squabbling boars from that direction thrilled me with anticipation. Moving into the field dark shapes in the distance began to materialise into boars, sows and half-grown piglets in the fading light. Two sparring boars behind a bush caught my eye. In the gathering darkness, I thought the boars were going to head to head and only realised as I shot that it was the behind of the bigger of the two that connected with my bullet. Another big boar charged around for the exit (boom!), he went down struggling then lay still, the sows and half-grown mob ran for the fence (boom!), another sow went crashing down the embankment. Now back to the first boar. He was behind a bush and in the near darkness hard to see. Was he alive or dead? I will just have to go in and see. His enraged squeals and clacking tusks was a strong enough indicator that he was ready for a fight! Despite a broken back, his front end followed me with evil intent wherever I tried to get him with my knife. Finally I was able to dispatch him by keeping him at bay with my sticks until my bush knife could do its work.
