Not so Funny: Proverbs 26:18-19 18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, 19 Is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, “I was only joking!” (NKJV) I am a big fan of humor. A good natured, well timed joke can bring delight into anyone’s day. I used to be a big fan of sarcastic humor but the older I become the less humorous sarcasm appears. I believe sarcasm is more about a passive aggressive attempt at dispersing our anger and a defense mechanism to keep others at a distance. If someone tries to challenge the sarcasm as hurtful they are told “I was just kidding around, can’t you take a joke?” It seems that every comedian on TV uses nothing but angry humor to insult others or themselves. In most cases our anger is a secondary emotion or response to a core issue of pain. We have become a disconnected society that lacks the ability to share our frustrations and pain with those around us. We become balloons over-inflated with toxic gases of unresolved hurts that we slowly leak out through our sarcastic humor. Has sarcasm become a wall of defense that keeps others from getting to know you and the hurts you carry? Try going without the use of sarcasm for one day and ask God to reveal the hurts and angry you carry inside. David Jones restorationpath.org .
