Not so long ago it was traditionally accepted that ones sense of self, ie. the soul was innate, permanent, and immutable. Curious, since such a baseless notion is refuted by the fact (to any thinking persons at least) that ones life experiences, changing health and physiology, and social and interpersonal continuously modifies and refines our personalities. Suffice it to say that our elderly self would recognize few things in common with our former toddler self. Now modern neuroscience, genetics, and other scientific disciplines are finding that what we recognize as the self is a construct that is even more fleeting and illusory than was formerly imagined.
