Not strictly intellectual history, but I thought Ellen - TopicsExpress

Not strictly intellectual history, but I thought Ellen Fitzpatricks remarks at the annual Meeting of the American Historical Association on the challenges faced by historians as public intellectuals today might be appreciated here. Whereas historians attend to structure and content as critical variables in the past, the public demand is for precedence. ... Did what is happening today happen before? The answer is invariably yes. Everyone can have a career as a public intellectual if they can answer that question. ... The danger is that inquiry makes of the past little more than a punching ground for a shard of glass that reflects who we are today.
