Not sure if you should celebrate Australia Day...??? Then go with the alternative: HAPPY RUM REBELLION DAY! The Rum Rebellion of 1808 was the ONLY successful armed takeover of government in Australian history... 20 years to the very day after Arthur Phillip founded European settlement in Australia. Now Im definitely NOT advocating that we all march on Canberra with guns drawn, but rather than ME over thinking Australia Day and: - Pondering the morality (or not) of Australias history, written, unwritten, perceived or factual, - Becoming involved in the controversy over its actual date, given Jan 1st 1901 being the actual day the Commonwealth of Australia came into existence, - Contemplating the impact this day eventually had on my Indigenous brethren, - Wondering whether it represents a truly multi-cultural Australia, - Being drawn into the stupid debate over what is, or what isnt, Australian, in nature... Well to all that, I say: Bugger all that malarky... The simple fact is, I drink rum and love the stuff, and right now Ive got no faith in my Government federal or state... So today Im drinking rum. contemplating the sorry state of Australian politics, and rather than getting depressed, Im talking with friends and family, who have their origins from all parts of the world, and remembering it could always be worse... So as I said: HAPPY RUM REBELLION DAY!!! (Its far less controversial) :-)
