Not the national attention for being an exceptional university that UND leaders were looking for. Theyre in a tough place, trying to steer through the deep divide that separates students, staff, alumni and fans, between those who are convinced that any use of Indian names and imagery incites and perpetuates racism and those who continue to insist that the campaign against the nickname -- led by an evil, overbearing NCAA and a vocal minority of politically correct Indian activists and academics. This has gone on too long. Its hurting UND. Its hurting North Dakota. Its hurting the people -- all the people -- of this state, especially the people of Spirit Lake and Standing Rock, who are themselves divided and have so much more serious matters to deal with.
