Not to be a communist or a prude, but when I heard about the concept behind THE INTERVIEW, it seemed like a pretty inappropriate idea to me. Having said that, in light of the wild developments of the past few weeks and todays seemingly official, across-the-board scrapping of the movie by Sony, rather than getting our Freedom Underoos in a bunch, why dont we take this as an opportunity to try something different: instead of going to the multiplex to pay way too much money to see another funny-in-some-parts-but-otherwise-forgettable-at-best-and-reprehensible-at-worst studio comedy, how about watching a movie that was not produced for the American masses but is nonetheless a laugh-out-loud hilarious, brutally uncomfortable, and deeply illuminating depiction of life in modern North Korea. If you havent seen Mads Bruggers THE RED CHAPEL, now is the perfect time. And once the credits begin to roll, hurry up and rewatch the trailer for THE INTERVIEW, at which point youll see just how elementary and unfunny the latter feels in comparison.
