Not to embroil myself in the current storm of incomprehensible - TopicsExpress

Not to embroil myself in the current storm of incomprehensible hatred/apathy and justified anger/fear, but this is an email that was sent to the housing staff regarding the recent UEA incident and subsequent responses made by the university. The confusing thing is that while housing staff are apparently free to disseminate this information among the student body at large, the administration does not do so itself. I have been told that this is the universitys policy regarding such incidents: to act, but not necessarily make public statements. As for myself, I disagree with this policy but am at least glad to know that incidents like this are not necessarily ignored by the university if they do not make a public statement about it. EDIT - In case the text is hard to read: Greetings Resident Staff, Earlier this evening we were made aware of unwanted messages posted to various student’s Facebook profiles. The postings were hurtful, cruel and unacceptable. I am grateful that you quickly reported your findings to your Assistant Director staff. I know you are working to thoughtfully care for students in your community—thank you for your continued good work. Please know that we have reported these incidents to the Bias Incidence Response Team, CSL, the College and UCPD. An investigation, led by Campus & Student Life, has already begun. To help with the investigation, the names of impacted students should be shared with your Assistant Director. Students impacted by the unwanted messages on Facebook, should immediately change their password, and report the incident to Facebook. Should students feel threatened, they should immediately contact UCPD. I know that this incident is concerning, and I am appreciative that you are working closely with your residents to best support the College Housing communities. Please know that Sophia, Nicole, Sean, Jim and I offer you our support as you continue to lead these conversations in your House. Please contact Assistant Director or I should you wish to discuss this further or if we can offer additional support and resources.
