Note: Insulin Edema>> One of the side effects of intense insulin therapy is insulin edema, however the condition is not so common.Insulin edema is seen more often in younger individuals and occurs due to rapid decrease in plasma glucose level after intense insulin therapy.The rapid fall in plasma glucose level cause decrease in plama osmotic pressure(fluid holding capacity) and may result in the movement of of fluid to interstitial space.Insulin edema is characterized by puffiness mostly around the ankels but can occur elsewhere,the condition is temporary and the edema goes away as the body adjusts to normal plasma glucose level.Insulin edema is selflimited and usually does not require any treatment but some cases may require diuretics.It is extremely necessary to exclude other more serious causes of edema in dibetics like diabetic nephropathy ,cardiovascular complications etc.
